What are the criteria for being accepted into the Honors Program?
There are a few different ways a student can qualify:
1) Earning a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5+, or
2) Achieving a 25+ on the ACT or a 1200+ on the SAT, or
3) Earning a cumulative University GPA of 3.3+
Do I need to apply to be in the Honors Program?
No. If you meet the minimum criteria, simply complete the Honors Program Registration form online or during your registration session. Then, the Honors Program Director will be in contact with you regarding course selection.
Students not automatically qualifying for the program may inquire about our alternate application process.
Will required Honors Program courses interfere with courses I need for my major?
No. Most Honors Program courses meet general education requirements. Also, if scheduling conflicts arise, the Honors Program Director will work with Honors students to resolve issues.
How many students join the Honors Program each year?
About 35 students join the Honors Program in their first year.
Can I enter the Honors Program after my first year at Minot State?
Yes. Current university students with a cumulative GPA of 3.3+ are eligible to participate.
How do I stay in good standing with the Honors Program?
All Honors Program students must maintain a 3.3+ cumulative GPA and a 3.0+ in their Honors Program courses.
Will I have an Honors Program advisor along with my academic advisor for my major?
Yes. The Honors Program Director serves as an academic advisor for all Honors Program students. Most students meet with both advisors during every advising period to help them stay on track academically.
What is the Honors Center?
The Honors Center is a classroom and lounge/study space designated exclusively for Honors Program students. It contains a student office with computers and printers, coffee maker, microwave, fridge, and plenty of cozy seating. The Honors Program Director's office is located in the adjoining office suite.
What are the long-term benefits of being in the Honors Program?
Based on their unique experiences of taking courses with other high-achieving students, along with research and experiential opportunities, Honors Program graduates prepare themselves for success in graduate programs and professional roles. Earning an Honors Program minor or concentration also sets our graduates apart from others in their same major.
