How to recycle printer & copier cartridges
In an effort to supply information to the different campus departments regarding recycling, the MSU Sustainability Committee has researched the following information when it comes to printer/copier cartridges. MSU encourages individuals and departments to do their part in recycling, but this information in no way reflects a bias towards one company or another.
The following are listed in alphabetical order:
- Computech has offered to pick up spent cartridges at your department on campus and process them for recycling at no charge. What they would ask in return is that participating departments purchase their replacement cartridges from them.
- Officemax takes cartridges of any brand for recycling and gives three dollars of in-store credit, put on a card, for any HP cartridge. To recycle with Officemax, you need to take the cartridge to the store.
- Staples gives three dollars in-store credit for recycled HP, Lexmark, Dell and Kodak cartridges. The in-store credit at Staples is turned over to IT, as MSU has no way to track the specific department. When recycling with Staples, you should say that the MSU rewards card is to be credited. To recycle with Staples, you need to take the cartridge to the store.
Many cartridges come with recycle labels that can simply be used to return the spent cartridge to the company. If this is the case, one can continue to mail those cartridges back to the supplier.
Xerox printer and copier cartridges can be mailed back to Xerox in original packaging using prepaid mailing labels. Just tape the label to the box and drop it off at any US postal office or box. Labels are included in most new Xerox products or can be printed using the linked pdf file.
