Minot State's Janessa Penner Named All-American
Again
Janessa Penner was named 2nd Team All-American
by the NAIA this week. The junior shortstop from Morden, Manitoba
knocked out 71 hits in 150 at bats this year for a torrid batting
average of .473
The speedy lefthanded hitting Penner also had 14
extra base hits including 3 home runs, 2 triples and 9 doubles.
"Being a two-time All-American is awesome",
stated Minot State head softball coach Bill Triplett. "Janessa
can pretty much do it all on the softball field". She can hit
for average, hit for power, run, defend, and she has a great arm.
That's basically the whole package. That's what they call a "five
star" player and that's exactly what she is."

Minot State Takes Second at DAC Tournament
Minot catcher Lana Dubois takes a swing vs. Dickinson on Sunday
Beavers Prepare for DAC Tournament
Members of the MSU softball team await teammate
Kira Peturson after she hit a home
run during a game against Dakota State earlier in the season.
MSU hopes to have play
like that from Peturson and the rest of the team as they begin
play at the Dakota
Athletic onference softball tournament today at Dickinson.
Minot State University softball was hoping to
get into the No. 2 spot for today's Dakota Athletic Conference
tournament.
The Beavers fell one win short and will be the
tournament's No. 3 seed.
While not ideal, MSU head coach Bill Triplett
isn't too worried.
"We would have liked to get the No. 2 because
it helps the pitching staff. We have to win two games to get to
Dickinson," he said referring to top seed Dickinson State. "In
a perfect world, it would be nice. But we feel fine having to
win two games and having a solid pitcher ready for Dickinson."
That pitcher would likely be one of the Mitchell
sisters. Top hurler Kayla Mitchell looks to be game 1 starter
today against Mayville State (10:30 a.m., MDT, in Dickinson) and
No. 2 looks to be Deanna Mitchell. Triplett will try to use Kayla
as much as he can.
"I talked to her and she understands that we
are going to use her," Triplett said. "I have pitched Kayla on
back-to-back days this year and she is better on the second day.
The one thing I don't want to do is to not pitch somebod and lose
and wish I would have gone with my best. I would rather Kayla
and Deanna run out of gas and come with our No. 3 late in the
tournament."
Kayla Mitchell finished with an 11-9 record with
four saves in 25 games. She threw 130 1/3 innings with a 2.94
earned runs average. Deanna Mitchell came on over the latter half
of the season to post a 7-3 record with a 3.57 ERA in 66 2/3 innings.
The X-factor might be No. 3 Bree Bartholomew. Bartholomew, who
has No. 1 stuff when healthy, has a 2.82 ERA and a 2-1 record
in limited time due to elbow problems.
"We can go to Bree, but once we do, she is done
for the next six days," Triplett said.
If the Beavers can't shut teams down on the mound,
Triplett said he feels confident MSU can outhit opponents.
"We have seven players hitting over .300 and
Kayla is at .298 which is basically .300," he said. "If you look
up and down our schedule, we are scoring eight, five, seven runs,
even in losses we are scoring runs. But once you get against the
upper echelon, you have to play good defense and pitch well and
win a 2-1 type game."
MSU is led at the plate by a host of players.
Janessa Penner is batting .508 with seven doubles, three home
runs and two triples along with knocking in 21. Alicia Penner
has 23 runs batted in and is hitting .364. Lindsey Landles leads
the team in home runs at five, has 18 RBIs and is hitting at .369,
while catcher Lana Dubois is batting .355 with 17 RBIs.
One key for the Beavers is getting good balance
from top to bottom in their order as No. 6 KiraPeturson is batting
.307 with four homers, No. 7 Molly Lundeen is at .314 with 21
RBIs, No. 8 Deanna Mitchell is .319 with seven doubles and 22
RBIs and No. 9 Tracee Tesch is at .214.
"That is the big thing about our batting order,
it is good top to bottom," Triplett said. "Kira is hitting .300
with four home runs and is a good stick and Deanna is really coming
around. The bottom of the order is very important. You don't want
to give their pitcher any rest."
Triplett feels both Mayville and potential second-round
opponent Jamestown College are very good teams.
"I think the whole league is better this year.
Anybody can beat anybody," he said. "I think Mayville will come
out with nothing to lose. They went extra innings with Dickinson
this year. I think we are the better team, but you never know.
We want to get up on them early and play ood defense.
"Jamestown can hit the long ball, they have a
couple of kids who can mash. You need to keep them off the bases
so those long balls don't hurt as much."
The tournament continues through Sunday with
the champion getting an automatic bid to the NAIA national tournament.
"We have good senior leadership this year," Triplett
said. "They don't want this to end. We will be ready."

Kayla Mitchell Named Pitcher of the Week
Kayla Mitchell of Minot State University has
been named the DAC pitcher of the week. Mitchell is a senior from
Portage, Manitoba. During the last week, Mitchell recorded 2 wins,
1 loss and also had a save in compiling a 1.42 ERA in leading
the Beavers to a 4-2 week. In four appearances, she gave up eight
runs, five earned runs on 19 base hits with 12 strikeouts and
nine walks.

Kruk Blasts Two Home Runs as J.V.'s Sweep Bottineau
Freshman second Baseman Britney Kruk hit a grand
slam in the third inning and a two-run shot in the 4th to help
Minot State J.V. beat MSU-Bottineau 13-0 in the first game of
a double header on Tuesday. Kruk also added a double in the 5th.
Brittany Sparwood pitched the shut out for the Beavers giving
up just 2 hits and striking out 10. Josie Gilles added two singles
for Minot.
In game 2, Shannon Murray picked up the win as
she struck out four and gave up only 2 hits. Kira Peturson pounded
out a three-run shot for Minot State and Deanna Mitchel added
a double and a single while Josie Gilles had two more singles
giving her 4 hits in the two games,

Beavers' Thiesen Out for the Season
3/25/09 - The Minot State Softball team and Coach
Triplett got some bad news today as the
MRI taken on Kyla Thiesen's left knee showed a torn ACL which will
sideline Thiesen the rest of the season.
The freshman from Brandon, Manitoba had earned
a starting position at second base for the Beavers.
"We're really going to miss her" said
coach Triplett. "She added speed to or line-up and was doing
a great job for us. I know that it's going to kill her to sit out
but she's such a great person that I know that she'll have the support
of every single one of her teammates.
Lindsey Landles will take over at second base for
the Beavers and Kayla Mitchell will play some two bag when she isn't
pitching.

Beavers Prepare to Open Season in Nebraska
The Beavers return first-team
All-American, Janessa Penner
The Minot State Fastpitch softball team has been
practicing since Feb. 1 inside the Minot State Dome and according
to Head Coach Bill Triplett, things are looking pretty good.
"We've had good workouts and all of us are
really looking forward to getting outside", said Coach Triplett.
"We're farther along this year than we were last year at this
time. The players have been dedicated to working out all year round
and they are ready to start the season".
Minot State's first game will be against Midland
Lutheran at noon on March 6th in Hastings, Nebraska. The Beavers
will also play Bethany and York later that day and Dana and Doane
on the 7th.
When asked about his line-up and what Beaver fans
can look forward to, Coach Triplett replied "We'll have a couple
different ways to go. It depends on who is pitching and who is catching.
Kayla Mitchell is our number one pitcher, but when she isn't pitching,
I'll have her bat in the line-up either as a DP or as a second baseman.
Lana Dubois is our catcher but she will get spelled once in awhile
by Lindsey Landles. When that happens, Landles will move from 3rd
to catcher and Alicia Penner will move from 1st to 3rd and Kira
Peturson will play first. It's great to have that diversity. Right
now, if we had a game today, I'd have Kayla Mitchell pitching, Lana
Dubois catching, Alicia Penner at first, Kyla Thiesen at second,
Janessa Penner at short and Lindsey Landles at third. The outfield
would be comprised of Molly Lundeen in right, Deanna Mitchell in
center and Tracee Tesch in left. With the DP/Flex rule, we can get
another bat in there such as Peturson, Goudy, Sparwood or Murray.
Like I said before, it depends on who is pitching and catching.
The awesome thing is, we have lots of options and lots of confidence
in our back-ups".
Shannon Murray, Deanna Mitchell, Bree Bartholomew
or Brittany Sparwood will be pitching when Minot's ace, Kayla Mitchell,
isn't toeing the rubber. Murray is a junior and the other three
are freshmen. Murray will also see time in the outfield along with
Deanna Mitchell, Lundeen and Tesch. Sparwood may get some at bats
too, most likely as a DP.
The roster is rounded out by newcomers Hayley Dommett,
Nicole Ziler, Josie Gillis and Britney Kruk.
===========================================================================
Newcomers Impressive in Preseason Scrimmages
Deanna Mitchell~~~~~~~~~~Kyla Thiesen ~~~~~~~~Lindsey Landles
There are lots of new faces on the Minot State softball team
this year. Nine newcomers have joined the Beaver squad. They
are freshmen Deanna Mitchell, Kyla Thiesen, Brittany Sparwood,
Britney Kruk, Bree Bartholomew, Josie Gilles, Nicole Ziler and
juniors Lindsey Landles and Hayley Dommett.
"Deanna Mitchell, Thiesen, and Landles have hit very
well in our live workouts", stated Head Coach Bill Triplett.
"Adding these three to our line-up will help the depth
in our order a lot."
===========================================================================
Like Always . . . . Pitching is the Key
Kayla Mitchell - - - - -Shannon Murray - Bree Bartholomew -
Deanna Mitchell-Brittany Sparwood
The Beavers pitching staff in comprised of senior, Kayla Mitchell,
who was named all-conference last year, and junior, Shannon Murray
and a trio of freshman in Bree Bartholomew, Deanna Mitchell and
Brittany Sparwood.
"A great offense can take you a long way but pitching always
has been and always will be the key to winning in fastpitch",
stated Coach Triplett." Kayla has developed into a good one
and Murray can be good too. Bree is battling an elbow injury. She
has great stuff but her health is a question. Deanna Mitchell will
get some starts and Sparwood will be in our pen and work j.v. games
too. I feel that we have what it takes to be a contender".
===========================================================================
Beavers Picked Second in the DAC
Minot State earned one first-place vote as the
Beavers were selected second in the Dakota Athletic Conference softball
preseason coaches poll.
The Beavers are coming off a 29-13 campaign last
season including a 14-6 mark in the DAC. Defending champion Dickinson
State garnered seven first-place votes and was named the pre-season
favorite. Valley City was third, Black Hills fourth, followed by
Jamestown, Dakota State and Mayville.
The Beavers begin their season at a tournament
in Hastings, Nebraska on March 6th and 7th where they will play
5 games.

Beavers Prepare for 2009 Season
The Minot State Fastpitch Softball team will have
its first official practice on Monday, February 2nd at 6:00 pm.
The first game of the season will be Friday, March 6 when the Beavers
play a 5-game stand in Hastings, Nebraska.
The Beavers return three all-conference players
in Kayla Mitchell, Alicia Penner and Janessa Penner. Janessa Penner
was also the DAC Player of the Year, Region 3 Player of the Year
and a first-team All-American. To go along with those three, also
returning are Lana Dubois, Molly Lundeen, Kira Peturson, Shannon
Murray, Ashley Goudy, and Tracee Tesch.
Newcomers to the team are Deanna Mitchell, Lindsey
Landles, Kyla Thiesen, Bree Bartholomew, Brittany Sparwood, Britney
Kruk, Josie Gilles, and Nicole Ziler.
Minot State Head Coach Bill Triplett says of his
team, "We should be pretty solid. We have a great nucleus with
what we have coming back and I'm also very happy with the newcomers
so that's encouraging."
The Beavers took second place in the DAC last year
as well as second place int eh DAC tournament. Continuing on after
that, the Beavers had a strong showing at the Region 3 tournament
in Sioux City, Iowa where they finished 3rd and ended the 2008 season
with a record of 29 wins and 14 losses.
