Nursing 456: Community Health Nursing

In 1920 C.E.A. Winslow, in his article “The Untilled Field of Public Health”, defined Public Health as “the Science and Art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health and efficiency through organized community effort…to insure everyone a standard of living adequate for the maintenance of health, so organizing these benefits as to enable every citizen to realize his birthright of health and longevity”. Eighty-five years later we are still building and improving on those goals.

I began at Minot State in August of 2005 and am delighted to be teaching community health nursing and pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Health. Before coming to Minot State, I was employed by First District Health Unit as the McHenry County Nurse, providing all public health programs to the people of that county. I believe that the concepts of public health nursing, particularly prevention and health promotion, can and should be applied to all areas of nursing. My research interest is studying how production agriculture relates to homeland security and public health by providing a safe and stable food supply. Another area of interest is in studying poverty as a culture, and identifying strategies to overcome barriers of poverty to health and longevity, especially in the rural setting.

My husband, Keith, and I ranch north of Towner, ND, where we raise registered Angus cattle and Quarter Horses. Check out our website: www.medalenranch.com!
