MSU celebrates Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Nov. 2
Minot State University Spanish students and the Spanish Club, in conjunction with multicultural support services, cordially invite all MSU students, faculty and staff to celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in the Multicultural Center on Nov. 2, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The Multicultural Center is on the lower level of the Student Center.
"The Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American countries and by Latin Americans living in the United States and Canada," said Sara Gietzen, Spanish Club president. "Spanish Club has organized this event for the past five years."
The ancient Aztecs and other Mexican pre-Hispanic civilizations believed that the dead come every year to see their families. The priests who came to Mexico with the Spanish Conquerors changed the Day of the Dead to Nov. 1 and 2, which corresponds to the Catholic celebrations of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. In the United States, it is primarily celebrated in the Southwest, California and wherever there is a high Mexican-American population.
Spanish instructor Kemerly Moorhouse, who is originally from Lima, Peru, will be playing guitar, charango and an Andean flute. Various foods will also be available for tasting.
