MSU NOTSTOCK reaches new heights in third year
An icon in music poster art and graphic design, Art Chantry, is the highlight artist for this year’s MSU NOTSTOCK. Chantry is an award-winning pop culture poster artist from Seattle and has worked with groups such as Nirvana and AC/DC to design unique artwork related to their music. His work has been exhibited at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Museum of Modern Art, Seattle Art Museum, the Smithsonian and the Louvre.
"Art Chantry is a pillar in music poster art and graphic design," said Bill Harbort, professor of art at Minot State University and NOTSTOCK organizer. "His low-tech, irreverent, garage-gritty style pioneered alternative punk-grunge graphics by celebrating retro-images, typography and composition."
MSU NOTSTOCK is a third-year event, to be held at the MSU Beaver Dam, as five popular artists and 20-plus local bands converge to offer a unique live art and music experience from Oct. 21 to 23.
Besides hosting Chantry for the three days, NOTSTOCK will feature Jeff Johnson, designer and owner of Spunk Design Machine in Minneapolis, Miss Amy Jo and Dale "TOOTH" Flattum of Who Made Who in Minneapolis and Minneapolis-based printmaker Bjorn Christianson.
"MSU NOTSTOCK highlights the diverse and growing poster-art scene that surrounds and brings visual beauty and interest to rock music across the globe," said Laurie Geller, chair of the MSU Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and NOTSTOCK organizer. "The event showcases these creative connections and shares them with the community as talented guests make art and play music live for three days at Minot State."
Along with producing posters, screening on T-shirts and skateboard decks, the artists will be joined by live music - more than 20 of the hottest local rock, punk and folk bands, such as Diabolic Octopus, Merick, Carly Ann, The Morning Red, Jazmine Wolff, Father Son and Holy Smokes!!!, Potential Caskets, Black River, Echo’s Answer, Rick Watson and more. In addition, there will be a presentation by Jeff Johnson at 7 p.m. on Oct. 21 and a presentation by Art Chantry at 7 p.m. on Oct. 22. Chantry’s presentation will be followed by a reception for guests and artists. Both presentations and the reception will be in the Conference Center (Student Center, third floor).
All parts of MSU NOTSTOCK, held throughout the Student Center, are free and open to the public. The artists will have posters for sale and will be available to sign other collected works.
