Nancy Murphy participated in the 2009 National Victim Assistance Academy
Nancy Murphy, Victim Assistance Academy coordinator and employee at Minot State University’s Rural Crime and Justice Center, participated in the National Victim Assistance Academy. The academy was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime and held in Fort Worth, Texas from March 2 to 6. The NVAA provides victim-service professionals with important updates on victims’ rights and victim services, as well as new developments in the victim-assistance field.
This recently revised and expanded academy is offered in three separate tracks that allow for training specific to the participant’s experience and longevity in the field. OVC collaborated with experts from the victim services field, academia, law enforcement and a variety of disciplines to create an even better capacity-building experience for all graduates.
The NVAA includes delegates from every area of the criminal-justice system, specialists in sexual assault, domestic violence and child victimization, as well as those who serve elderly victims, survivors of homicide victims and victims of juvenile offenders. Murphy was selected through a competitive application process.
Minot State University and the RCJC will host North Dakota’s first Victim Assistance Academy from June 7 to 12. The NVAA for North Dakota is funded by a U.S. Department of Justice grant, given to the RCJC. A large portion of the cost for this year’s academy is supported by the grant.
Individuals who will benefit from the Victim Assistance Academy are law enforcement officers, social workers, prosecutors, victim advocates or any professional who works with crime victims.
