‘Hometown Heroes’ give scholarships to 10 Velva seniors

Ten Velva seniors get an early start on paying for their university education, as a Minot State University "Hometown Heroes" visit to the Star City hands out scholarships to some of their best students.

As a part of Minot State’s quest to support Vision 2013 and become one of the premiere public, regional universities in the "great" Great Plains, the university is introducing a bold and encompassing scholarship campaign to attract proven students who are engaged leaders of their school communities. The MSU Development Foundation’s "Distinctive and Engaged Scholars" program and "Service for the Common Good" awards were introduced to recognize exemplary student performance in the classroom and in the community.

Ten of the high school seniors from Velva fit perfectly into this new scholarship program and were honored today with an award, contingent upon their admission to Minot State. Those individuals who earned the Distinctive and Engaged Scholarship are: Zechariah Andersen, Cole Lauinger, Sydney Sollid, Quaid Degenstein, Jamie Sauter, Kalyn Mack, Kyle Kuntz, Troy Jesperson and Elizabeth Letvin. For the new Service to Common Good award, Jamie Effertz was given the scholarship.

As a part of today’s scholarship presentations, the new MSU Hometown Heroes program visited with students and community leaders. The premise of the program is to place highly recognizable students, faculty, staff and alumni in their hometown schools and cafes to promote how Minot State University changed their lives! For this year, MSU’s Enrollment Services staff will target communities where Minot State is the closest four-year public university.
