Dr. Joseph Hegstad Scholarship Fund Established At MSU

The Heritage Singers and the Voices of Note have established a new endowed scholarship at Minot State University honoring professor emeritus of music Joseph Hegstad.

Hegstad, now of Scottsdale, Ariz., was a member of the music faculty from 1970 to 1995 and served as division chairman. While at MSU, he was choral director for the Concert Choir, Vagabond Male Chorus and the Jazz Madrigal Singers. Prior Hegstad performed as a baritone soloist with the United States Air Force Band "Singing Sergeants."

Hegstad is a founding member and former director of the Heritage Singers and is credited for continuing the traditional December performance of "Messiah." In 1992 the initiating performers of the work, the Minot Symphony Orchestra and MSU Concert Choir, chose not to continue with the piece. Hegstad combined the Heritage Singers and Voices of Note to carry on the perennial favorite.

The Heritage Singers and Voices of Note presented a concert on Mother’s Day, May 11, to honor Hegstad and his wife, Jackie. Hegstad directed several numbers and was featured as a soloist. A free-will offering was accepted at the concert to help establish the scholarship.
