Tenure-track position in the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science

OPPORTUNITY
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Minot State University, Minot, North Dakota, invites applications for a tenure-track position beginning August 2010.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required qualifications: A terminal degree in mathematics education is preferred. A terminal degree in mathematics or statistics, with strong background in education, will be considered. Other required qualifications include: excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated success in and enthusiasm for teaching; a demonstrated desire to contribute to the mathematics education community through service and scholarship; and a desire to join a team of teachers who enthusiastically work together to engage students in the study and application of mathematics and statistics.

Desired qualifications: Mathematics teaching experience at the elementary, middle school, or secondary level; ability to teach applied statistics at the undergraduate level; experience in integrating technology with teaching; and an area of specialization such as (but not limited to) statistics, geometry, or mathematical history.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The teaching load for this position is 12 hours per semester (fall and spring) and possibly one graduate class during the summer term. The person will advise master's research projects, serve on department and campus committees, and make scholarly contributions to the mathematics education community. Additional opportunities for online teaching are possible.

THE UNIVERSITY
Minot State University was founded in 1913 and has evolved from a normal school to a Carnegie Masters I Institution. The campus has three colleges and offers 12 master's degree programs. There is a rich mix of liberal arts and professional programs offering more than 60 majors at the undergraduate level. MSU has a strong online program that uses a wide variety of communication tools to deliver coursework, training, and workshops to a worldwide audience. Enrollment is approximately 3500. THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science currently includes 14 full-time and 5 part-time faculty members. It offers majors in mathematics, mathematics education, and computer science, and a minor in applied statistics. The department offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) Mathematics degree, which averages 25 participants each summer. It also offers a mathematics concentration for elementary and middle school teachers in the Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree program. Our research emphasizes applications of mathematics, statistics, and computer science, together with mathematics education. THE COMMUNITY

Assistant Professor in European History, excluding France
The History Program in the Division of Social Science at Minot State University invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in European History, excluding France. Thematic specialization and geographic focus open. Teaching in one or more of the following outside fields for non-western/thematic coverage required: Public History, Environmental History, India, China, Near East / Middle East, or Pacific Rim.

The successful candidate will typically teach two upper-level courses and two world or western civilization surveys each semester. Experience and commitment to high-quality teaching of first-year students and advanced majors is a priority. The candidate will join a stable, dynamic department with approximately 90 majors, a record of excellence in teaching, and a commitment to active scholarship, community engagement and public history.

Surficial Geology
The Department of Geosciences at Minot State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in surficial geology. This appointment will be at the assistant professor level starting fall 2010. A PhD in geological sciences or related field by time of appointment is expected. We seek someone with a broad, field-based background in surficial processes. Teaching expectations include upper-level courses in geomorphology, soils, and global climate change; introductory GIS; and contribution to introductory courses (environmental geology and physical geology).

Applicants for the position should demonstrate potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching and active engagement in research and scholarship. Research expectations include development of an active research program that would ideally include local field-based studies involving undergraduate students. In addition to basic lab and field equipment, the department is well equipped for a variety of types of work, including material characterization (XRD, SEM-EDS), water analysis (ICP, GFAA, GCMS), and geospatial investigations (Topcon total station, ESRI 9.2 ArcEditor Suite, Trimble GeoXT).

We also seek someone who will enthusiastically help the Department grow in terms of its own programs and in terms of contributions to other programs on campus. We seek someone who can contribute to an anticipated new interdisciplinary program in Studies in Community and Environment, which is being developed to help MSU address Strategy One of Vision 2013: Creating a Distinctive Mission Focused on Engagement and Place. The Department will also be offering some basic geology coursework for an anticipated new program in Energy Economics and Finance being developed in the College of Business in response to increased energy development in North Dakota.

Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice
Job Description: The Department of Criminal Justice at Minot State University invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning either January, 2009, or August, 2009. The Criminal Justice program offers both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice. Additionally, it offers a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice through a collaborative arrangement with the University of North Dakota. The Department has five tenured or tenure-track faculty positions in addition to utilizing the expertise of numerous scholars and practitioners from around the state. Criminal Justice courses are delivered through compressed video or classroom instruction to multiple sites around the state. The CJ Department services approximately two hundred undergraduate and thirty graduate students. Normal teaching loads are four courses per semester with research and overload teaching opportunities available. Teaching duties include both graduate and undergraduate courses. Successful applicants are expected to develop a record of teaching, research and publication excellence.

Applicants with criminal justice or criminology teaching experience are encouraged to apply, especially those who enjoy teaching research methods and statistics or who have a track record of successful grant driven research and publication. Applicants with field experience in criminal justice also are encouraged to apply with preference given to those with experience in one or more of these areas: law enforcement, corrections, courts, juvenile justice, military criminal justice, homeland security, loss prevention or related criminal justice area. Preference will be given applicants with completed Ph.Ds. in Criminal justice or Criminology, or a related discipline with a criminal justice related emphasis. Retired faculty who enjoy teaching are encouraged to apply. ABD’s who are within one year of completing doctoral degree work may be considered. Juris Doctorates do not qualify for this position, however, Ph.D.’s in Law or Law Studies may be considered.
