Pre-Professional Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher Education Minor
Description:
Description:
Deaf education has licensure and credential requirements are so rigorous that they usually can’t be completed in a four-year undergraduate program. MSU has adapted a unique approach to preparing teachers to work with deaf children. Rather than having a five or six-year undergraduate program, MSU’s Special Education department provides undergraduate classes that can be included as a Pre-Professional minor. This minor can be part of any of MSU’s undergraduate teacher education programs. In this way, much of the coursework required for a Deaf Education credential can be completed as part of an enriched general-education teaching degree. Students who successfully complete the Pre-Professional minor then seek admission to our Master of Science in Special Education - Deaf and Hard of Hearing program.
Notes:
Notes:
This approach has two advantages over other universities’ six-year undergraduate degrees.
1) First, our graduates earn a masters degree. When they begin work, their initial salaries can be thousands of dollars higher than graduates of other universities’ long-term undergraduate programs.
2) Second, generous alumni donations to the MSU Foundation will pay all or part of the costs of the graduate portion of our Deaf Education program.
