Department of Biology

Today, we went out to one of our field sites to see what kinds of critters are out there for amphibians to eat. Then we went back to the lab to see what we could get the salamanders and frogs to eat.  They ate lots!  And alot of different things: they seem to like fruitflies (at least for the chorus frogs 'cause they're so little), earthworms, crickets, and some mealworms.  They don't seem to like to eat leeches!

The terrestrial flopped out their tongues to eat, while the larval salamander suck the food in by opening their mouth and making their throat really big.

Steve Deban's really cool website show superslowmotion movies of frogs and salamanders eating.
